This article deals with operational research and air targeting in the preparation of Overlord. It underlines le role of Solly Zuckerman, a scientist who pioneered a scientific approach to determine what targets were the most critical at the operational and strategic level. His role was particularly important in the design of the “Transportation Plan”, a bombing offensive aimed at the rail network, mostly in northern France, in order to delay and hamper German reinforcement to Normandy.
