Résumé En

This volume, based on a selection of statues from the collection of the Museo Egizio in Turin, offers the reader some keys to understanding Egyptian statuary. The author presents the evolution of different styles throughout Egyptian history by analysing the materials employed, with their meanings and implications, the dimensions of the statues, and their different forms, attitudes, and attributes. The volume is richly illustrated with colour photographs and reconstruction drawings of the contexts, and is organised in the following subsections: 1) How to look at an Egyptian statue; 2) Pharaohs, nobles, and deities; 3) Cult objects and symbols of power; 4) Different forms, different functions; 5) The importance of the materials; 6) From the quarry to the cult place; 7) Three millennia of stylistic evolution; 8) Reuse, usurpation, and mutilation.
