« The Bishop’s Candlesticks » : une certaine tradition de la réception hollywoodienne des Misérables

Lorsqu’il s’agit d’évoquer les adaptations des Misérables, l’énoncé le plus évident et le plus attendu est le suivant : c’est le destin de Jean Valjean. Pourtant il existe une toute première tradition cinématographique dans laquelle Les Misérables, c’est l’histoire des «Chandeliers de l’Evêque». Dans cet article, nous allons essayer de retrouver cette tradition, d’exhumer quelques films-jalons, en commençant par l’une des toutes premières adaptations du roman réalisée par Albert Capellani en 1906 ou encore celle de Lewis Milestone en 1953. L’essentiel de notre analyse se concentrera sur ce film dont l’originalité tient au fait qu’il propose une lecture conservatrice -au sens nord-américain du terme- du roman et qu’il constitue l’avatar le plus tardif de la tradition des «Chandeliers de l’Evêque».

When considering adaptations of Les Misérables, the most obvious and expected statement is that the story follows the destiny of Jean Valjean. However, there exists another historic cinematographic tradition in which Les Misérables is not the story of a character, but rather that of a pair of objects: the “Bishop’s Candlesticks”. In this article, I will retrace this tradition, exhuming several key films. I will start with one of the first adaptations of the novel by Albert Capellani in 1906 and then move on to an adaptation by Lewis Milestone in 1953. The majority of my analysis will focus on Milestone’s film whose originality rests on its conservative – in the North American sense of the term – interpretation of the novel. It is also the latest incarnation of the tradition of the “Bishop’s Candlesticks”.
