Les projets réalisés par Georges Candilis pour la Grèce en 1958-1969 sont peu nombreux et relativement peu connus par rapport à son activité internationale. L’ensemble n’est pas dépourvu d’ampleur tout en restant inachevé. Candilis n’en retourne pas moins régulièrement en Grèce, reconnaissant avoir toujours habité entre deux mondes. À travers cette oscillation et le voyage incessant entre Athènes et Paris, son œuvre et sa personnalité semblent avoir été un condensé de contradictions. La Grèce lui rend hommage en tant qu’architecte majeur de la scène internationale, sollicite et respecte son jugement, mais lui donne peu d’occasions de mener à bien ses grands projets. Pourtant, elle l’a toujours attiré, peut-être comme la face opposée de sa carrière internationale et réussie à Paris. Arrivé pour la première fois à Athènes en tant que réfugié, ne parlant pas grec, il y est revenu constamment jusqu’à la fin de sa vie. Athènes, la Grèce étaient pour lui bien plus qu’une origine : un lieu idéal et une patrie idéale.

Georges Candilis worked on very few projects in Greece in the decade between 1958 and 1969 and they are relatively unknown in comparison to his international work. The ensemble is nevertheless consequential, if unfinished, and Candilis did return to Greece regularly. Through this oscillation and incessant back and forth between Athens and Paris, his work and his personality seem to have been a mass of contradictions. Greece paid tribute to him as a major international architect, it sought and respected his judgement but rarely afforded him the opportunity to see his big projects through to the end. He was, nevertheless, always drawn to Greece, perhaps as a counterpoint to the international success he enjoyed in Paris. Candilis came to Athens for the first time as a refugee who didn’t speak Greek, and came back again and again until his death. Athens and Greece were, for him, more than his origins, they were his ideal place and his ideal homeland.
