Drawing on the analysis of the processes and administrative frameworks of funding scientific research in France and, more broadly, in Europe, this paper highlights some of the main normative constraints, both political and economic in nature, which apply to research in the Humanities and Social Sciences. While the picture over the last few years has prompted misgivings, some recent evolutions may well signal a possible brighter future.
