All the studies reveal an unequalled distrust towards the idea of progress. This new distrust highlights certain ways of thinking fed by political and religious movements. Not long ago, the benefits of innovation were celebrated but nowadays, the attraction of the unknown has yielded to the fear of uncertainty. What are the motivations of those groups who stir up this prevailing pessimism and what pushes them towards radicalization? Do they intend, like some ultra-leftist groups, to put an end to science? Our contemporaries’ distress may stem from their loneliness, even though means of communication enable them to interact with their fellow beings more than ever.
