Christophe Perrin, « Sartre and the problem of the free passions », Revue de métaphysique et de morale, ID : 10670/1.d2d184...
For Descartes, generosity is the free passion par excellence. For Sartre, all passions are free, but generosity is freedom’s passion. They both praise the latter, as one may expect. But more surprising is Sartre’s critique of Descartes’s theory. Sartre’s ambiguous analysis might be due to generosity’s ambiguity. Yet Sartre is a double-dealing man and oversimplifies Descartes’s theory of passions and freedom in order to better promote his views.
