Incarceration and affiliation to Islam should be considered less as independent variables than possible factors leading to involvement in violent activism. But this does not mean that we should not try to understand what leads incarcerated persons to embrace religion, for better or for worse, in order to face the prison ordeal. Religion often helps mitigate the failures of an institution which, today, knows neither how to protect, reintegrate nor offer a future to its “patrons”.
