Lipps and Husserl: Einfühlung

In this contribution I examine the discussion between Lipps and Husserl about Einfühlung. Such a discussion relies on the Appendix XVI (1913) in Husserliana XIII (1905-1920) dedicated by Husserl to intersubjectivity. The latter provides us with his reading of some of Lipps’ key-passages in the Leitfaden der Psychologie (1903-1906-1909). After having retrieved the main points at stake in Husserl’s reading, I offer a re-reading of Lipp’s texts themselves, i.e. the very ones that are quoted and analyzed by Husserl. Such a delineated inquiry clears the way for a possible re-examination of the meaning of Einfühlung in Husserl and Lipps, and for a questioning of the distinctive conceptual framework (the knowledge of the other, the intuitive affective life) that guides the contrasted interpretation of the experience of Einfühlung.
