The mathematics of randomness experienced tremendous changes throughout the interwar period (1918-1939), especially in Paris where the Institut Henri Poincaré (IHP) opened in 1928 and soon became an international scene for probability. Using a cross-approach, we analyse the social processes at work within the Faculty of Science of Paris and the Academy of Science playing a part in the strengthening of probability as a mathematical discipline and supporting research in this field. We highlight the strategies used by a small group of mathematicians in order to build an institutionnal framework for the probabilistic developement both locally and internationally. We particularly analyse the practice of cultural transfer fueling the probabilistic research in Paris.

Le calcul des probabilités connaît des bouleversements profonds entre 1918 et 1939, notamment à Paris où l'Institut Henri Poincaré ouvre en 1928 et se constitue rapidement en centre international dans ce domaine. En utilisant une approche croisée, nous analysons les processus sociaux à l'œuvre au sein de la Faculté des sciences de Paris et au sein de l'Académie des sciences participant à l'affirmation du calcul des probabilités comme discipline mathématique et soutenant les recherches dans ce domaine. Nous mettons ainsi en évidence les stratégies mobilisées par un petit groupe de mathématiciens pour donner un cadre institutionnel aux dynamiques probabilistes à l'échelle parisienne et internationale dans lesquelles ils s'investissent activement. Nous analysons en particulier la pratique d'un transfert culturel alimentant les développements probabilistes à Paris.
