Résumé
This paper aims to investigate the extent to which companies’ environmental performance affects their financial performance. Based on a sample of 90 French companies included in the SBF 120 between 2007 and 2016, our results show that environmental performance is significantly and positively related to financial performance, as measured by Tobin’s q. However, this relationship is sometimes moderated by the sector in which the company operates. Our findings show that, in terms of financial performance, companies operating in “polluting” industries benefit more from achieving better environmental performance than those in non-polluting sectors.
