Résumé 0

As in most countries emerging from decolonisation struggles, the Syrian State had made health a focus of its development policy. The counterpart, however, was that society was submitted to an increasingly repressive power. In 2011, the popular uprising against the regime provoked a response of unprecedented violence. The use of hospitals as torture centres has become widespread, and many doctors have been complicit in unspeakable acts. The article draws on a remarkable investigation into the role of doctors in mass murders in Asad’s Syria to question the paradox of the material and moral collapse of an entire society.
