From Prascovie Loupalova to Elisabeth Potoska. The fortune of a Siberian story, from French novel to Italian opera ( in French), RLC LXXXVII, no. 3, july-sept. 2010, p. 161-178. The present paper retraces the adaptation of a Russian fait divers in French literature and Italian opera through the first half of the 19th century. The story of a young girl, who came by feet the way from Siberia to Saint-Petersburg for to ask the tsar to reprieve her father, perfectly illustrates the beginning interest of the European literature in Russia, specifically in Siberia. Its transposition at first to a novel, then to theater and to the opera, shows an exemplary line through the popular literary genres of the 19th century as well as the changes required by each choice, but also by the public’s taste. Finally, the fait divers also influences the collective imagination by leaving its own marks in a number of fictional texts with Siberian subjects.

Le présent article retrace l’adaptation d’un fait divers russe par la littérature française et l’opéra italien pendant la première moitié du XIXe siècle. L’histoire d’une jeune fille, qui fit à pied le chemin de la Sibérie à Saint-Pétersbourg pour demander la grâce de son père à l’Empereur, illustre parfaitement l’intérêt naissant de la littérature européenne pour la Russie et plus particulièrement la Sibérie. Sa transposition au roman, puis au théâtre et enfin à l’opéra, montre une filiation exemplaire à travers les genres littéraires populaires du XIXe siècle ainsi que les changements imposés par chaque choix, mais aussi par le goût du public. Enfin, ce fait divers influence à son tour l’imaginaire collectif et laissera ses traces dans de nombreux textes de fiction à sujet sibérien.
