In recent days, reading novels and stories is becoming increasingly difficult. Those of us engaged in literature-related writing and teaching often find that reading has become more of a professional task. There is very little literature available in Hindi that holds the promise of offering something new.In reality, this issue is not limited to Hindi alone. What we traditionally call 'pure literature' is struggling to keep up with the sensibilities of its time, adapt to rapidly changing realities, and meet the needs of its audience. Why is this happening? Have the writers fallen behind, or has the medium of print, which has been the vehicle for disseminating literature for nearly six centuries, become outdated? Or perhaps, literature itself has become irrelevant? It seems like a crisis is repeating itself.On one hand, writers working in the print medium have fallen behind the times, and on the other hand, the medium itself has become outdated. Literature is now treading on a new path. Instead of the singular focus on print, it is being created and disseminated through multifaceted mediums, with millions of people embracing this transition. However, traditional critics seem to have lagged behind. They are struggling to redefine literature through these new means, its new forms, and its new audience. Hence, it appears that those who used to appreciate literature have become few and far between.

दिनों-दिन उपन्यास और कहानियां “पढ़ना” कठिन होता जा रहा है। साहित्य संबंधी लेखन और अध्यापन में लगे हम लोगों को पढ़ने का काम अक्सर एक पेशागत काम की तरह करना पड़ता है। ऐसा साहित्य हिंदी में बहुत कम आ भी रहा है जिसे पढ़ कर बहुत कुछ नया मिलने की उम्मीद जगे। वस्तुत: बात सिर्फ हिंदी की नहीं है, परंपरागत रूप से जिसे हम विशुद्ध साहित्य कहते हैं, वह अब अपने समय की संवेदना, तेजी से बदलते यथार्थ और उपभोक्ता की जरूरतों की नब्ज पकड़ने में सफल नहीं हो रहा। ऐसा क्यों है? लेखक पिछड़ गए हैं या प्रिंट नामक वह माध्यम पुराना पड़ गया है जिसमें हम पिछले लगभग छह सौ सालों से साहित्य को प्रसारित करने के आदी रहे हैं? या फिर ‘साहित्य’ ही अप्रासंगिक हो गया है? संभवत: संकट दुहरा है। एक ओर प्रिंट माध्यम में काम करने वाले लेखक अपने समय से पिछड़े हुए हैं, दूसरी ओर यह माध्यम भी पुराना पड़ गया है। साहित्य एक नए रास्ते पर चल पड़ा है। प्रिंट की एकरसता की जगह वह बहुआयामी माध्यमों के बीच निर्मित-प्रसारित हो रहा है और करोड़ो-करोड़ लोग उसके साथ चल रहे हैं, लेकिन पारंपरिक आलोचकगण पीछे छूट गए हैं। साहित्य के प्रसारण के नए माध्यमों को, इसके नए-नए रूपों को, इसके मूल्यों के नए वाहकों को वे रेखांकित नहीं कर पा रहे हैं। इसलिए ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि साहित्य को पसंद करने वाले लोग बहुत कम हो गए हैं।
