Résumé 0

"In a context of growing suburbanization, does a polycentric urbanstructure lead to better job-housing balance? The study of seven verydifferent French urban areas emphasises the existence ofemployment subcenters which, in addition to the city center, are themain destination of the workers. Two kinds of subcenters arehighlighted: the suburban subcenters, vast and close to the centerwith which they make up a greater center characterized by a highjobs-housing proximity, and outlying subcenters, smaller and furtherout but well situated along the main transport axes. The latterencourage a certain proximity to jobs for the workers living in thosesubcenters, but still depend strongly on the jobs located in thesuburban subcenters. The evolutions observed between 1990 and1999 seem to indicate that these subcenters would not resist thegrowing distance between home and work location in particularbecause of a large suburbanization of workers outside theemployment subcenters."
