From the Ordinary to the Everyday Ludwig Wittgenstein posits that we must “bring words back from their metaphysical to their everyday use”. But what is this everyday use ? I first examine the difficulty of determining what this ordinary use is, and the extent to which it evades us, it is lost to us. It is that very indeterminacy that defines ordinary language as the point of departure for the concept of the Ordinary, as Stanley Cavell elaborated, drawing in particular on the thinking of R. W. Emerson. This article thus proposes to question the difference between, on the one hand, the Ordinary, a core concept of the “ordinary language philosophy”, anchored in the use of the language and in the notion of form of life, and, on the other hand, the Everyday as a common theme of aesthetics and anthropology.

J’examine ici d’abord la difficulté à déterminer quel est cet usage ordinaire, et à quel point il nous échappe, est perdu. C’est cette indétermination même qui fait du langage ordinaire le point d’origine du concept de l’ordinaire, tel que Stanley Cavell l’a développé, s’inspirant notamment de la pensée de R. W. Emerson. L’article propose ensuite d’interroger la différence entre l’ordinaire, concept central de la «philosophie du langage ordinaire», ancré dans l’usage du langage et la notion de forme de vie, et le quotidien comme thème commun à l’esthétique et à l’anthropologie.

Examino aquí primero la dificultad de determinar cuál es este uso ordinario, y hasta qué punto este uso se nos escapa, se pierde. Es esta misma indeterminación la que hace del lenguaje ordinario el punto de origen del concepto de lo ordinario, tal como lo desarrolló Stanley Cavell, inspirándose en particular en el pensamiento de R. W. Emerson. El artículo propone cuestionar la diferencia entre lo ordinario, concepto central de la “filosofía del lenguaje ordinario”, anclado en el uso del lenguaje y la noción de forma de vida, y lo cotidiano como tema común en la estética y la antropología.
