Francesca Radina, « Un impianto dell’età del bronzo nell’Alta Murgia pugliese: il recinto e il tumulo del sito di Le Chianche (Minervino Murge, Bari) », MOM Éditions, ID : 10670/1.do6c8t
In a landscape characterized by a chain of hills rising to between 400 and 600m in altitude, within the Alta Murgia and the Lucanian mountains, the Soprintendenza per i beni archeologici of Apulia identified in 2006, during a preventative archaeological operation, the site of Le Chianche, uphill from a long, deep karstic incision. Within a presumed expanse of about a hectare and a half, an area of 650 sq. m was explored, in which a stone structure with a rudimentary double facing was revealed, which enclosed a large, quadrangular open space of about 22 x 16m. Passages gave access, while on the exterior lay scattered remains of clay surfaces carrying evidence of use (pottery, lithics and faunal vestiges). On the inside, offcentre towards the west, a compact structure in the form of a mound, about 6m in diameter, was built after the period when the internal space was used, with large and medium-sized stones laid flat in rudimentary concentric circles, in which larger blocks were set vertically. Based on the preliminary results – the research was suspended due to lack of funding – it appears evident that the mound was built after the use period of the interior space, to judge by the homogeneity of the pottery, comparable in certain aspects to the early facies of the Proto-Appeninian. In the absence of elements related to funerary use, a study of the types of objects related to the use of the space may be able to give weight to the hypothesis that this construction had a role other than a purely functional one.
