Grande figure de l’Allemagne d’après-guerre, le théologien luthérien Helmut Thielicke accorde une place importante à la catégorie de compromis dans sa monumentale Ethique théologique. Elle permet, selon lui, de faire le pont entre la normativité des commandements divins et le devenir historique de l’homme, sans tomber dans le relativisme. Après une présentation du projet théologique de Thielicke dans le champ de l’éthique, cet article analyse son interprétation théologique du compromis qui tente de maintenir la radicalité des exigences divines telles qu’elles sont exprimées dans le Sermon sur la montagne.

Leading intellectual figure in post-war Germany, Helmut Thielicke, a lutheran theologian, has devoted many pages of his Theological Ethics to the compromise. According to him, the compromise helps to to bridge the gap between the normativity of God’s commandments and historical development of man. After a presentation of his theological project in the field of ethics, this article analyzes the theological interpretation of the compromise he offers. It is supposed to maintain the radicality of the divine requirements as expressed in the Sermon on the Mount and therefore to escape relativism.
