Dans Réponse à Job, Jung établit une analogie entre l’image de Yahvé – telle qu’elle apparaît dans l’histoire de Job de l’Ancien Testament  –, et notre expérience de l’inconscient. La nature toute-puissante et contradictoire de l’inconscient collectif ou psyché objective peut infliger à la conscience de l’homme des épreuves douloureuses semblables à celles que Yahvé fait subir à Job dans le drame divin. À travers sa création poétique, une patiente atteinte de troubles somatiques introduit le paradigme de Job dans son analyse. L’élaboration symbolique faite par Jung de l’histoire de Job trouve dans le cas de Cécile une illustration de son importance psychologique. Le cheminement de Job est la métaphore d’un parcours initiatique qui nous aide à surmonter l’épreuve de la souffrance. Chez la patiente, la confrontation avec l’inconscient collectif a produit une transformation de la nature de l’inconscient et un élargissement de sa conscience.

In Answer to Job, Jung establishes an analogy between the image of Yahweh – as it appears in the Old Testament story of Job –, and our experience of the unconscious. The all-powerful and contradictory nature of the collective unconscious or objective psyche can inflict painful ordeals on the human consciousness, like those to which Yahweh subjects Job in the divine drama. Cécile, a woman patient suffering from somatic disorders, brought the Job paradigm into her analysis with a poem she had written. Cécile’s case illustrates the psychological importance of Jung’s symbolic elaboration of the story of Job. Job’s journey is the metaphor for an initiatory quest that helps us overcome the ordeal of suffering. In this patient, the confrontation with the collective unconscious produces a transformation of the nature of the unconscious and an expansion of her consciousness.
