L’article suggère une correction simple à un passage corrompu du Pro C. Rabirio Postumo de Cicéron (XIV, 40), évitant de recourir à des conjectures dont la plus fréquente, due à Turnèbe au seizième siècle, introduit dans le texte de Cicéron le mot grec κατάπλους qu’on ne retrouve qu’ultérieurement et dans des textes poétiques. Il suffit en effet de conserver le texte original des manuscrits en changeant seulement une lettre à l’incompréhensible artata pour en faire la référence à la capacité de mesure égyptienne artaba, ce qui permet à Cicéron d’introduire une note d’ironie.

This article suggests a straightforward emendation for a corrupted passage of Cicero’s Pro C. Rabirio Postumo (XIV,40),which can avoid further speculations consisting in the insertion of an inappropriate word, as Turnebus did in the sixteenth century with the Greek word κατάπλους, a word that occurs only later and in poetry. As a matter of fact, the original text found in the manuscripts proves itself satisfactory if we change one letter in the mysterious word artata. This emendation sheds new light on this passage that would then refer to the Egyptian measure of capacity called artaba: such an allusion enabled Cicero to introduce a touch of irony within his text.
