Os macaenses no Brasil : o cerco se mantém Qual alternativa de sobreviviência cultural representou para os macaenses do Brazil e seus descendentes a criação de Casas de Macau, nas cidades do Rio de Janeiro e em São Paulo ? Numa primeira parte se procura visualizar a presença portuguesa em Macau como uma componente e ao mesmo tempo uma ilustração da experiência portuguesa na Asia como um todo. Macau seria a cidadela, último refúgio de um cerco iniciado há 500 anos. Em seguida apresenta-se, sob uma perspectiva histórica, a relação do Brasil com Macau. Tentou-se, no início do século xix, sistematizar a entrada de chineses de Macau no Brasil como forma de desenvolver a cultura do chá no país. O objetivo era abastecer o mercado europeu, especialmente o inglês, e para isso fez-se vir de Macau, homens e mudas de chá, que foram estabelecidos em pontos da então capital Rio de Janeiro. A iniciativa foi frustrada e já em 1825 muitos colonos haviam se tornado vendedores ambulantes, cozinheiros ou pequenos comerciantes. E finalmente verifica-se a atual presença macaense no país. A revolução chinesa nos anos 1940 foi o primeiro grande motor da diáspora. Depois a guerra colonial na África, nos anos 1960 e 1970, e a revolução cultural voltaram a forçar a saída de macaenses. Nos anos seguintes, a situação interna - estagnação econômica e falta de emprego - a emigração não cessou. Hoje, cercados pela cultura brasileira, eles tentam armazenar elementos de sua identidade, o que poderá ser, após a passagem do territória para a China, a única forma de sobrevivência dessa cultura mista originária do encontro de portugueses e chineses.

The Macanese of Brazil : the Siege Goes On What alternative for cultural survival does the creation of «Casas de Macau» in the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo represent for the Macanese of Brazil and their descendants ? To begin, we have sought to visualise the Portuguese presence as a component and, at the same time, as an illustration of the Portuguese experience in Asia as a whole. Macao will be a citadel, the last refuge in a siege started 500 years ago. The relation between Brazil and Macao is then presented from a historical perspective. At the beginning of the 19lh century, the arrival of Chinese from Macao in Brazil became systematic with the aim of developing tea-growing in the country. The objective was to supply the European and, in particular, the English market and, to do so, it sufficed to import tea plants and to bring in labour from Macao, workers who established themselves at the entrances to the capital, Rio de Janeiro. The initiative failed, however, and many immigrants became itinerant salesmen, cooks or shopkeepers. To conclude, we can note the presence of Macanese in Brazil today. The Chinese Revolution of the 1940's was the main driving force behind the diaspora. Afterwards, colonial war in Africa in the 1960's and 70's and the Cultural Revolution once again led to the departure of inhabitants from Macao. In the course of the following years, due to the domestic situation (economic stagnation and unemployment) emigration continued. Today, hemmed in on all sides by Brazilian culture, this people is seeking to hoard up the elements of its identity, which, after the return of the territory to China, could represent the only possibility for the survival of this mixed culture which originated in the encounter between Portugal and China. continued. Les Macanais au Brésil : le siège se poursuit Quelle alternative de survie culturelle représente, pour les Macanais du Brésil et leurs descendants, la création de Maisons de Macao dans les villes de Rio de Janeiro et de São Paulo ? Dans un premier temps, nous avons tenté de visualiser la présence portugaise à Macao comme une composante et en même temps une illustration de l'expérience portugaise en Asie dans son ensemble. Macao sera une citadelle, ultime refuge d'un siège commencé voici 500 ans. La relation du Brésil avec Macao est ensuite présentée dans une perspective historique. Au début du XIXe siècle, l'entrée de Chinois de Macao au Brésil est devenue systématique, pour développer la culture du thé dans le pays. L'objectif était d'approvisionner le marché européen, en particulier le marché anglais, et il suffisait, pour ce faire, d'importer des plants de thé et de faire venir de la main d'oeuvre de Macao, laquelle s'est établie aux points d'entrée de la capitale Rio de Janeiro. Mais l'initiative a échoué et dès 1825 de nombreux colons étaient devenus vendeurs ambulants, cuisiniers ou petits commerçants. Par ailleurs, on constate aussi actuellement la présence de natifs de Macao au Brésil. La révolution chinoise des années 1940 a été le principal moteur de la diaspora. Par la suite, la guerre coloniale en Afrique, dans les années 1960 et 1970, et la révolution culturelle, ont de nouveau entraîne un départ des habitants de Macao. Au cours des années qui ont suivi, du fait de la situation intérieure (stagnation économique et chômage) l'émigration s'est poursuivie. Aujourd'hui, cerné par la culture brésilienne, ce peuple tente de thésauriser des éléments de son identité, ce qui pourrait représenter, après le passage du territoire sous souveraineté chinoise, la seule manière de survie de cette culture mixte, originaire de la rencontre du Portugal avec la Chine.
