Dans sa pratique de médecin gastro-entérologue et dans une perspective psychosomatique, l’auteure constate que les douleurs abdominales, fonctionnelles ou organiques, sont un symptôme fréquent chez la femme. L’hypothèse d’une composante psychique faisant souvent partie de leur étiopathogénie est soulevée. Selon l’auteure, elle peut être analysée au même titre que dans les pathologies psychiques. Quand la douleur est la motivation initiale de la psychothérapie, l’amélioration est obtenue « de surcroît » si refoulement ou déni ne s’opposent pas à son acceptation.

The author of this article, in light of her clinical practice as a gastro-enterologist and from a psychosomatic standpoint, posits the argument that abdominal pains, whether they be functional or organic, are a symptom frequently encountered among women. The hypothesis of a psychical factor in their etiopathogeny is also discussed. According to the author, this phenomenon may be analysed in the same way as psychical pathologies. When pain is a main cause for someone choosing to embark on psychotherapy, improvement of the condition is obtained ‘in addition’, if repression and denial do not stand in the way of its acceptance.
