Gaston Bouthoul et l’Institut international de sociologie : Une matrice intellectuelle

Cet article propose de revenir sur les racines intellectuelles du projet polémologique grâce auquel Gaston Bouthoul s’est imposé comme l’un des représentants du champ des sciences sociales en France après 1945. Avant de constituer le « titre de gloire » d’un homme isolé, la polémologie peut être considérée, ainsi que Bouthoul le concédait lui-même, comme un « héritage moral » dont il était le dépositaire : celui de l’œuvre collective d’une sociologie de la guerre initiée au sein l’Institut international de sociologie à partir de 1915, notamment par René Worms et Guillaume-Léonce Duprat.

‪This article aims at exploring the intellectual roots of the polemological project, thanks to which Gaston Bouthoul became one of the representatives of the field of social sciences in France after 1945. Rather than “the claim to fame” of a single man, polemology can be considered, as Bouthoul himself conceded, as a “moral heritage” of which he was the custodian: that of a collective sociology of war. Work on this heritage began in the International Institute of Sociology in 1915, with René Worms and Guillaume-Léonce Duprat notable contributors.‪
