Hydro-electric units for very low heads, with siphon draft tubes and rising flow. A particular category of very low heads cannot be harnessed economically, unless they are fitted out with special power generating units designed with the main object of achieving a substantial saving on civil engineering costs. The Authors describe one of these special types of layout, in which the power generating unit proper — i.e. the turbine and generator — are a single assembly installed at the bottom of the upstream canal section, at the intake to the siphon through which they discharge. This arrangement needs very little civil engineering work, which need only involve a simple cofferdam in some cases. These units are particularly useful for equipping disused locks or relief spillways.

L'équipement de toute une catégorie de très basses chutes ne peut être rendu rentable que grâce à l'utilisation judicieuse de groupes générateurs d'une conception particulière, visant, en tout premier lieu, à permettre la réalisation d'une économie substantielle sur les dépenses de Génie Civil. On décrit un type de groupes, en forme de siphon et dont la partie active — génératrice et turbine — constitue un ensemble monobloc, situé au fond du bief amont, à l'entrée du siphon. Ce groupe nécessite, pour sa mise en oeuvre, des ouvrages de Génie Civil réduits au strict minimum, parfois même à un simple batardeau. Ces dispositions s'appliquent tout particulièrement à l'équipement d'écluses désaffectées et de pertuis de décharge.
