Résumé 0

This article examines five genre taxonomies of metal music between 2001 and 2010, examining how their logic and design reflects implicit beliefs about genre traits and relationships. Ranging from scholarly monographs to online maps, these taxonomies rely on a linear conception of influence that privileges legibility and stability over more complex relationships. The article argues that these visualizations of genre both inform and reflect common, but often erroneous, beliefs about metal music among its audiences and producers. By drawing attention to the often subtle assumptions behind metal taxonomies, this article aims to help scholars better understand fan debates about genre.
