Résumé 0

The etymological analysis of the present tense of the verbs ‘to be’ and ‘to go’ in Pierre Chantraine’s Dictionnaire étymologique de la langue grecque is based on the state of knowledge at the time this work was written, i.e. now more than a half-century. It therefore requires a thorough revision, which is made possible by the development of the laryngeal theory for the Indo-European verbal roots *h1es- and *h1ey-. Examination of the data shows how deep the distance is between traditional views and the current state of I.-E. comparative linguistics.
