After the villagers had mentioned that the area of the site called Kelekagzi Mevkii had been the place of numerous illicit excavations, the Museum of Gaziantep decided to intervene and discovered two houses. The excavations of the House of the Maenad were done in 1998-1999. Two chronological phases have been distinguished in this building. A triclinium belonging to the first phase was put to light : it comprised a floor mosaic and was bound, on its Eastern side, by a corridor which was situated between the triclinium and room I. This room, which was probably a bedroom, could not be fully excavated, but a floor mosaic partially appeared. To the South, a small bathroom (A3) was uncovered. Further on, room II has been excavated : its walls showed two different phases. The floor mosaic depicts, in its Western part, Akratos and Euphrosyne. Further to the South, we uncovered, in 1999, a part of the house that could have been a peristyle during the first phase of occupation. Room A6 constituted its Northern gallery. Later on, the house underwent numerous refurbishments . Room II (A4) is cut by a wall, built directly upon the floor mosaic, which ran in an Easterly -Westerly direction. The peristyle is also transformed and the Southern wall of its gallery becomes the Northern wall of the new peristyle. On the stylobate of this second phase, four column bases were still in situ. Bathroom 2 (A5c) is built at the Eastern end of the latter peristyle, as well as room III (A5d), at the Western end. The floor mosaics of the house have been damaged ; however, in the triclinium, two fragmentary figures, amongst which Orpheus that can be identified thanks to an inscription, can be seen in the Northern panel ; in the Southern one, the high quality face of a feminine figure often called "the Gipsy Girl" could be a Maenad's face and became the symbol of Zeugma. In this house, the Museum of Gaziantep also uncovered the mosaic of Akratos and Euphrosyne, as well as other panels depicting Medusa, or Dionysos and Ariadne. Thanks to the mosaics and the ceramics that have been found in this excavation, it is possible to date the first phase of occupation of the house in the IInd century AD. This house has been occupied for quite a long period : above the second phase of occupation, an ash layer including glazed pottery of the XIh-XIIh centuries was uncovered. This structure may be a simple house, but its situation as well as its dimensions suggest that it might have been a building with commercial functions. In the same area, the House of Okeanos was excavated in 1999. Its architecture is much damaged. The best preserved part comprises a basin and a peristyle (peristyle I). At the Western end of its Southern gallery, a coin hoard comprising 264 bronze coins, was uncovered. The basin itself and the ground of three of its sides were decorated with geometric mosaics. The Eastern part of the house is built on a lower level. Room A2 presents a geometric floor mosaic, as well as room A3 which has also a mosaic with a circular panel containing a bust of Dionysos. Finally, to the East, peristyle II has, in its centre, a mosaic depicting Okeanos and Thetys, amid Erotes riding a dolphin and fishing Pan.
