Résumé 0

Home is the ultimate place for intimacy with the self and for intimacy with others, “extimacy”. Having said that, the places in the home in which this intimacy develops, influence, and even forge, the residents’character and the family functioning. The author here studies intimacy as it relates to the basement and the attic in a house, as spaces of intimacy and memory. These spaces are experienced in a singular manner, and they are attributed notions of opposition and complementarity. Certain African myths on the male and the female genders can help to understand why human beings endow these spaces with so many symbols. The author illustrates these ideas using personal experience.
