Animals, in the plural and somewhat ‘by chance’, are the subject of late specific attention - ‘animal’ is not one of the ’transitional words’ quoted in ’Roland Barthes by Roland Barthes’. Integrated into an anthropology (they highlight ‘traits’ of human community life), then linked to the rediscovery of affect (the ‘digression’ in ‘La Préparation du roman’ is highly significant), animals are nevertheless present throughout Barthes's life.

Les animaux, au pluriel et un peu « par hasard », font l'objet d'une attention spécifique tardive – « animal » n'est pas cité parmi les « mots transitionnels » de "Roland Barthes par Roland Barthes". Intégrés dans une anthropologie (ils mettent en relief des « traits » de la vie communautaire humaine), puis rattachés à la redécouverte de l'affect (la « digression » de "La Préparation du roman" est fortement signifiante), les animaux sont pourtant présents tout au long de la vie de Barthes.
