The power of the human spirit is to be able to name its commitment in the world and in society. The word “promise” has the aspect of a general concept, but it only has meaning by being practiced in the singular and towards others; the human spirit knows that it exhibits in this a knowledge which is not only original but above all innate. After having described the different philosophical approaches of promise and its performativity, the author goes through its various modalities in time: promise is the risk of the future. He concludes from this that the gratuity of the gift is present in the word which is given.

La puissance de l’esprit humain est de pouvoir nommer son engagement dans le monde et la société. Le mot « promesse » a l’aspect d’un concept général, mais il n’a de sens qu’en étant pratiqué au singulier et envers autrui ; l’esprit humain sait qu’il y expose un savoir non seulement original, mais surtout originaire. Après avoir décrit les différentes approches philosophiques de la promesse et sa performativité, l’A. décline ses harmoniques dans le temps : la promesse est le risque du futur. Il en conclut à la gratuité du don présent dans la parole offerte.
