Louis Henry et al., « La population de la France de 1740 à 1860 », Population (documents), ID : 10670/1.e5399a...
SUMMARY Up to the end of the \9th century, net migration in France was negligible. Thus, the size of the population at different periods may be estimated from birth and death statistics classified by sex and age. Such statistics have existed since 1806 and have already been used by Bourgeois-Pichat for the reconstitution of the population from that date onwards. A collation of vital statistics collected from a sample of registers between 1740 and 1829 enables us to go back a further 65 years. Previous estimates which related to the territory of 1815 can now be extended to the present territory and we have constructed series for the period up to 1860. This enables estimates of the population by sex and age groups to be made every five years between January 1, 1740 and January 1, 1860, and to estimate the losses caused by the Revolution and the Empire at different periods.
