Crises in Iran’s east flank heighten vulnerabilities in the Islamic Republic as well as its possibilities of action in the area. In Afghanistan, Iran is trying to avoid instability and to restrain the American influence in its borders. As for Pakistan, cooperation between both states is limited and determined by the Baluchistan issue, an irredentist minority existing in the three states. Teheran’s actual room for maneuver is related to the current nuclear crisis.
