Entre art et science, l'histoire à l'Institut d'urbanisme de l'université de Paris (1919-1971)

L’histoire est traditionnellement présente dans l’enseignement de l’urbanisme qui se construit en France au long du xxe siècle, ainsi qu’en témoigne la pédagogie de l’Institut d’urbanisme de l’Université de Paris (1919-1971). Elle y est successivement portée par les figures de Marcel Poëte et de Pierre Lavedan. Elle tend toutefois à s’isoler de l’urbanisme lorsque la technicisation de celui-ci se renforce. L’histoire voit ainsi son statut passer de préalable à la planification à celui de discipline de recherche de plus en plus autonome. La difficulté des historiens de l’ iuup à positionner leurs travaux apparaît révélatrice des relations complexes entre histoire, planification et recherche qui marquent la discipline urbanisme au long du siècle.

The development in France of the teaching of urban planning throughout the whole of the twentieth century has always traditionally included the historical dimension, as witnessed by the pedagogy adopted by the Institute of Urban Studies of the University of Paris (1919-1971) and as seen successively in the work both of Marcel Poëte and of Pierre Lavedan. However, as urbanism became more technical, history became progressively isolated in the new discipline. History shifted from being understood as a precondition for the urban project to becoming more of an autonomous research discipline. Poëte and Lavedan’s difficulties in postioning their own work gives insight into the complex relations between history, urban planning and research which have marked the discipline of urban studies throughout the century.

ResumenLa historia tradicionalmente presentada en la enseñanza del urbanismo es aquella que se construye en Francia a todo lo largo del siglo XX, como lo muestra la pedagogía utilizada en el Instituto de Urbanismo de la Universidad de Paris (1919-1971). Ello ha sido sucesivamente representado por figuras como Marcel Poëte y Pierre Lavedan. Sin embargo, tiende a aislarse del urbanismo, en el momento en que el enfoque técnico del mismo se refuerza. La historia cambia de un estatus previo a la planificación urbana hacia un enfoque de disciplina de investigación cada vez más autónoma. La dificultad de los historiadores del iuup por orientar sus trabajos de investigación, muestra un conjunto de relaciones complejas entre la historia, la planificación y la investigación que definen la disciplina del urbanismo a todo lo largo del siglo.
