Résumé 0

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the digestive tract. The aim of our study is to report the epidemioclinical and evolutionary characteristics of this tumor entity, as managed in the medical oncology department of a tertiary care facility. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all cases of GIST documented in the medical oncology department of the Hassan II University Hospital, Fes, over a period of 8 years. Results: 63 patients were included. The mean age of our patients was 57.7 ± 15.1 years, with no gender predominance. Gastrointestinal bleeding was the main mode of disease manifestation (53.9%). Gastric localization was most frequently observed (39.7%). Spindle cell type was predominant (55.5%). Tumors were metastatic from the start in 26.9% of cases. R0 surgery was performed in 95.4% of cases. This was preceded by neoadjuvant imatinib in 15.9% of cases. At a median follow-up of 40 months, overall survival and recurrence-free survival for patients with localized disease were at 57 months and 35.5 months, respectively. In patients with metastatic disease, overall and progression-free survival were at 18 and 15 months, respectively. Conclusion: The management of GIST must always involve multidisciplinary consultation. In our context, many efforts must be made to improve access to molecular diagnostic testing and targeted therapies, and to improve prognoses.
