Standards Banquet: What happens when IFLA and ISO come to the same table

Cooperation between IFLA and ISO was established after World War II under the auspices of UNESCO. Both organizations have a long history of involvement in standardization in the field of information and documentation. IFLA focuses on standards for library services and bibliographic processing. ISO specializes in technical standards. The development process for ISO standards follows several stages from inception to publication. This work is carried out by groups of experts appointed by the members of the committee concerned. ISO shows through its collaborations with organizations with category A liaison status that standardization work can bring together experts from different backgrounds for the benefit of the international community. A joint IFLA/ISO work programme could be developed on the basis of the draft standards under development on both sides.

La coopération entre l'IFLA et l'ISO a été établie après la Seconde Guerre mondiale sous les auspices de l'UNESCO. Les deux organisations ont une longue histoire de participation à la normalisation dans le domaine de l'information et de la documentation. L'IFLA se concentre sur les normes relatives aux services de bibliothèque et au traitement bibliographique. L'ISO se spécialise dans les normes techniques. Le processus d'élaboration des normes ISO suit plusieurs étapes, de la conception à la publication. Ce travail est effectué par des groupes d'experts désignés par les membres du comité concerné. L'ISO montre, par ses collaborations avec des organisations ayant le statut de liaison de catégorie A, que les travaux de normalisation peuvent rassembler des experts de différents horizons au profit de la communauté internationale. Un programme de travail conjoint IFLA/ISO pourrait être élaboré sur la base des projets de normes en cours d'élaboration de part et d'autre.
