Florin-Constantin Mihai et al., « Water resources preservation through circular economy: The case of Romania », HAL SHS (Sciences de l’Homme et de la Société), ID : 10.1016/b978-0-323-95280-4.00002-3
Romania is facing serious challenges in the long-term process of transition from a linear economy towards a circular economy highly promoted by EU regulations and policies. Besides the energy transition to renewables or solid waste management issues, water management is another key sector needing to be upgraded and developed for achieving a circular economy. This work examines the water resources (groundwater, surface water) in Romania, environmental pollution and linear economy threats. To combat these threats, improvement of water supply infrastructure, wastewater, sanitation and sludge management is required in both urban and rural communities. Best circular economy initiatives related to water management are highlighted in agricultural and industrial activities. Additionally, efficient water resource usage should be promoted at household level. Knowledge gaps and future perspectives in Romania are further discussed regarding water resource preservation through circular economy initiatives.
