In Athens, the owl is both the bird-attribute of Athena and a political symbol of thecity. However, on a corpus of Attic red-figures vases, the diskoi are decorated with anowl motif in black silhouette presented in front of the spectator. Held, stretched, placedon the ground or presented close to the face, these owl diskoi particularly highlight thisowl motif which is part of the Athenian culture. The diskos which, as an athletic object,contributes to constructing the ideal image of the Athenian shaped in the paideia,becomes, decorated like a shield, a frontal political sign. These athletic diskoi seem togive the owl an episeme symbolic meaning that catches the gaze of the spectator whileconveying how much the Athenian identity, which is shaped partly at the gymnasium,is articulated to the goddess Athena Polias.

À Athènes, la chouette est à la fois l’oiseau-attribut d’Athéna et un symbole politique dela cité. Or, sur un corpus de vases à figures rouges attiques, les disques du gymnase sontdécorés d’un motif de chouette en silhouette noire affichée face au spectateur. Tenus,tendus, posés au sol ou présentés près du visage, ces disques à la chouette mettentparticulièrement en avant ce motif chevêche qui fait partie de l’imaginaire athénien. Ledisque qui, comme objet athlétique symbolique, contribue à construire l’image idéale del’Athénien façonnée dans la paideia, devient, décoré tel un bouclier, un signe politiquefrontal. Ces disques du gymnase semblent donner à la chouette une valeur d’épisèmequi interpelle le spectateur tout en véhiculant combien l’identité athénienne, qui seconstruit en partie au gymnase, est articulée à la déesse Poliade Athéna.
