Résumé
In this paper, I propose to renew the methodological approach of the old question concerning the composition of The Prince, while at the same time opening up new interpretive perspectives on the evolution of Machiavelli’s political thinking. By integrating textual criticism with political and institutional history, the research leads to the discovery of facts of the highest importance to comprehend the choice of a dedicatee: during the final phase of The Prince’s writing, a Constitutional text was issued which restored the Medici’s ancient regime and its senatorial order. The article is completed by two appendix: the first entails the fundamental law passed on 22 November 1513; the second proposed a solution to the problem of the so-called «altered structure» of The Prince’s chap. III.
