Innovation through Tradition : a few Comments on Roman Coinage from its Onset of to the Augustan Principate. A massive innovation of the Classical World, coinage nevertheless took a long time to appear in Rome. Moreover, it underwent several dramatic changes in the course of history, eventually standing out as one of the Empire’s main features. Ancient sources tend to underestimate these transformations, laying stress instead on a long and smooth monetary tradition for reasons pertaining both to the nature of coinage and to the values of ancient Roman society.

La monnaie frappée est une innovation tard venue à Rome. Elle subit en outre de profonds et violents changements qui la conduisent, après des débuts discrets, à devenir une des structures majeures de l’Empire. Ces métamorphoses et ces changements d’échelles sont minorés dans les sources, qui insistent au contraire sur la continuité de l’histoire monétaire romaine pour des raisons tenant à la fois aux valeurs de la société romaine elle-même et aux caractéristiques de la monnaie.
