"Since their arrival in Chiapas (between 1981 and 1983), the organizedten thousand of the forty-five thousand refugees -because the othersare disperse- were removed for purposes of national security to newcamps in Campeche and Quintana Roo (1984-1985). At the end of1996, of the 9, 681 "refugees" who lived in four camps in Campeche,55% had been bom in Mexico, and the adults 18 years old and overwere invited by ACNUR and COMAR to decide if they wished to remainin the country in order to regularize their immigration situation orto return to Guatemala, According to the official figures, 80% of thepeople that had taken refuge in Campeche had decided to stay and wishedto naturalize themselves as Mexicans, beginning with the formalitiesof the immigration form (FM2). In this setting, using a stratified sampleof 10% of the groups that make up the four Campechan camps, a surveywas carried out with the selected families with the objective of knowingthe specific opinions of the refugees: willingness to return, willingnessto stay, or indifference/indecision. The results illustrate the aspirationsof 196 families of the existing 1,776, representing nine native Mayanlanguages and groups that now have the experience of being refugeesfor 16 years."
