The acquisition of information on the species of wood sculpture in East Asia has attracted particular attention because it provides valuable information on the religious connections and cultural transmission not only in Japan but also in other East Asian countries. In this study, synchrotron radiation X-ray tomography at BL20XU of SPring-8 was applied to a very small sample taken from a statue of a Japanese Shinto statue in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art to identify the species of Magnolia sp. The result of the study revealed that the statue was made from magnolia wood.
