Grande oubliée de la nouvelle histoire des émotions, l’émotion collective pâtit à la fois de son assignation idéologique et polarisée, de sa réduction au lieu commun et de la méfiance conséquente des historiens face elle. Cet article propose au contraire de la prendre au sérieux : en prenant à bras-le-corps les témoignages historiques, il s’agit alors d’identifier comme émotion collective ce que les sources percevaient et décrivaient comme telle. En analysant les sources narratives du mouvement patarin milanais sous l’angle de l’émotion collective, nous nous interrogeons sur le rôle joué par l’émotion collectivement ressentie dans la performativité des événements, dans la création de nouveaux corps collectifs, enfin dans les transformations historiques.

Often overlooked in the new history of emotions, the notion of collective emotion suffers both from its polarising ideological associations and its reduction to a commonplace, prompting historians to remain wary of it. This article argues on the contrary that it should be taken seriously: by actively engaging with historical testimonies, collective emotion emerges as that which the sources themselves described and perceived to be such. An analysis of the narrative sources associated with the pataria movement in Milan through the prism of collective emotion offers insights into the role played by collectively experienced emotion in giving rise to events, new collective bodies and ultimately historical transformations.
