Independence and unionism go hand in hand in Central America. At least, this is what the 1921 commemorations tried to reaffirm, despite the failure to rebuild the political union. A study of the heroic models that were celebrated in these festivities allows us to highlight the social projects in conflict, both at the national and regional levels. On the one hand, official heroes are updated; on the other, new figures are incorporated into the pantheons in an attempt to challenge an exclusive and homogeneous vision of the nation inherited from the 19th century. The circulation, negotiation and appropriation of heroic figures are studied here mainly through newspaper articles and school textbooks.

Independencia y unionismo van de la mano en Centroamérica. O por lo menos eso se intentó reafi rmar en el marco de las conmemoraciones de 1921 a pesar del fracaso de la reconstrucción de la unión política. Estudiar los modelos heroicos que se celebraron durante estas festividades permite poner de realce los proyectos sociales en pugna, tanto a nivel nacional como regional. Por un lado, se actualizan los héroes ofi ciales, y por otro se incorporan nuevas fi guras a los panteones en un intento por cuestionar una visión excluyente y homogénea de la nación heredada del siglo XIX. La circulación, negociación y apropiación de las fi guras heroicas se estudian aquí principalmente a través de artículos de prensa y de textos escolares.
