Yannick Ripa, « The Birth of War Drawings : The Brauners and the Children of the Spanish Civil War », Vingtième Siècle. Revue d’histoire, ID : 10670/1.f29b66...
Françoise Brauner, pediatrician, and her husband Albert, a doctor in literature, educator of problem children, volunteers for the attacked Spanish republic, helped refugee children evacuated from the combat zones. In working with them, the couple discovered the playful and therapeutic virtues of drawings for children carried into the turmoil of war. While they were in favor of free expression, the Brauners nevertheless tried out an innovative experience: the young Spanish children had to represent their life before during and after the war. Thus was born the Brauner collection and with it war drawing, an inestimable source for the historian.
