"Estimating the Coverage of SystematicVaccinations among the Balearic IslandInfant PopulationBack ground: In or der for vac ci na tion pro grams to be ca -rried out pro perly, it is es sen tial for the vac ci na tion co ve ra ge tobe known. On the Ba lea ric Islands, the re ported co ve ra ge wasmuch less than for the rest of Spain. The ob jec ti ve of this studyis that of es ti ma ting the co ve ra ge of the vac ci na tions in clu dedon the re com men ded sche du le up to 18 months of age (4 do sesof oral po lio, te ta nus and diph the ria; 3 do ses of whoo pingcough; 1 dose of meas les, ru bella and mumps).Methods: A des criptive, cross-sec tional study of the po pula -tion base. The ideal-time fre quency dis tribution es timators andthe co rresponding con fidence in tervals were cal culated at 95%(CI95%) for a sam ple of the re sident two-year-old (born in 1995)Balearic Island po pulation se lected by means of a sin gle-stageconglomerate ran dom sam pling ba sed on cen sus sec tions. TheNational Pu blic Health System and Na tional Health Insti tutevaccination re cords were re viewed, the data from the vac cina -tion do cument ha ving been re quested from the fa milies and theclinical re cord from the pri vate pe diatricians by te lephone.Re sults: The sam ple in clu ded 606 chil dren, it ha ving beenpos si ble to ob tain full in for ma tion on 532 chil dren. Full in for -ma tion was ob tai ned on 377 ca ses (62%) from the pu blic healthsec tor re cords. The least de gree of co ve ra ge was found for thediph the ria vac ci ne, 518 chil dren ha ving been fully vac ci na ted,96.8% (CI95% = 94.8 ? 98.1), the hig hest de gree of co ve ra geha ving been found for the whoo ping cough vac ci ne, 537 chil -dren, 98.9% (CI95% = 97.5 ? 99.5).Con clu sions: Good vac ci na tion co verage was found toexist on the Ba lea ric Islands, being si milar to what has beenbeing es ti ma ted for Spain as a who le.
