Résumé 0

Since 2016, social movements have been characterized by their almost systematic commandeering of public space. This invasion of public space often takes the form of graffiti or unauthorized posters. These same movements adopt references to a long history of struggles, with graffiti often explicitly citing past revolutions. Based on a body of largely personal and unpublished photographs, this article looks at wall inscriptions to analyze the revolutionary imaginaries at the heart of contemporary social movements, examining references to the Commune during the Nuit Debout protests in 2016, the visual imagery of the Yellow Vests movement (Gilet jaunes) that evoked the French Revolution, as well as ambivalent references to May 1968.
