Résumé 0

This article analyzes the transformations in the role of copyright in the music industry within the framework of a political economy of communication approach based on a combination of contributions from the socio-economics of the cultural industries and the Marxist periodization of capitalism. The aim is to chart the historical use of copyright as a means of creating value over the course of the industry’s development. This involves a materialist re-reading of the socio-economic modeling proposed by cultural industry theory: what the latter calls the “editorial model” is interpreted here beyond simple risk management as a historical modality of value production in media capitalism.
