Résumé 0

Bankruptcies are a common phenomenon in football, with eighty-one having occurred in France between 1975 and 2018 alone. However, this sector is rarely considered by the academic world, which usually only does so in a predictive capacity. Although rigorous, the second type of risk that this approach presents (that the predicted bankruptcy never occurs) severely limits its relevance for regulators. This article attempts to address this limitation and understand the trajectories that lead to these organizations’ failure by combining quantitative and qualitative approaches. Its results provide a better understanding of the false positives that are inherent in predictive models. They also illustrate the importance of sector-specific considerations in this process.
