Résumé 0

From a reflection about the attempt of Jacob Rodrigues Pereire to establish in 1777 a travel permit and an identity card for the sole Portuguese Jews from Western Europe who wished to travel to Paris, the author wonders about how to explain the relation this group of Portuguese bears to space from the French observation post. A threefold structure is suggested : this step of Pereire is aimed first at extending the geographic borders of the privileges granted to the Portuguese so as to apply them to the entire kingdom ; together with the width of the legal space, he cares about the width of their real-life space since it helps to maintain a Sephardic identity which can be defined both by their belonging to the diasporic space and by the setting apart from the other Jews ; lastly, the endeavors of Pereire for the protection of these privileges urge to compare the problems nurtured by the status of the Jews with the development of the rights of people and more specifically of the legal status of the foreigner in the age of the Enlightenment.
