Cette étude pose la question de l’influence de la censure sur le costume féminin dans le cinéma iranien entre 1954 et 2022, et par conséquent sur l’image de la femme ainsi présentée à l’écran. Consacrée à la période Pahlavi, la première partie aborde la propagation de la modernité voulue par le Shah : cette occidentalisation du pays eut pour effet que les costumes des films Farsis de ces années-là, commerciaux, vulgaires et néanmoins populaires, n’étaient l’objet d’aucune censure. Tout autre fut la situation après la Révolution de 1979 et pendant la guerre Iran-Irak (1980-1988). La deuxième partie, consacrée notamment au cinéma de la « Défense sacrée », analyse les exigences vestimentaires du nouveau régime politique et les contraintes auxquelles fut alors soumis l’habillement des actrices. La troisième partie évoque l’assouplissement de la censure pendant les années 1990-2005, malgré une réglementation encore assez tatillonne. Sont alors présentées la manière de vêtir à cette époque les acteurs et les actrices, tant iraniens qu’étrangers, et la façon dont les cinéastes profitèrent du relâchement relatif de la censure pour en contourner les interdits. La quatrième partie met en évidence la remarquable évolution vestimentaire du cinéma contemporain, qui cherche à donner une image réaliste et plus vraisemblable de la femme iranienne. Sont abordées pour finir les règles plus sévères en vigueur à la télévision, et la réglementation imposée aux actrices et aux réalisatrices pour qu’elles témoignent des valeurs irano-islamiques dans les festivals internationaux.

This study analyzes the influence of censorship on women's costumes in Iranian cinema between 1954 and 2022, and its cultural impact on the image of women presented on screen. The first part is devoted to the Pahlavi's period and the spread of modernity and westernization of the country by the Shah which had a significant effect on "Farsi" films of those years. An era of mostly commercial and pop cinema with eased up depiction of sexuality which had almost no censorship. Quite contrary to the situation after the 1979's Revolution of the Islamists and during the Iran-Iraq war (1980-1988). The second part, focuses in particular on the "Cinema of the Sacred Defense" a term used in reference to the Iraq-Iran war, during which the clothing codes became strictly enforced by the Ministry of Islamic Culture of the new political regime, and thus the constraints to which the clothing of the actresses was then subjected. The third part evokes a slight relaxation of the censorship during the years 1990 - 2005. In spite of the regulations still rather finicky, there were clear changes in the manner which actors and actresses, both Iranian and foreign, were dressed at that time. Filmmakers learned to take advantage of the relative relaxation of censorship to circumvent the prohibitions. Finally the fourth part highlights the remarkable evolution of clothing in our recent cinema, which seeks to give a more credible and realistic image of the Iranian woman. This eventually results in more severe rules on the state television and the regulations imposed on actresses and directors so that they would represent Islamic values in international festivals.
